What’s new for Copilot – June 2024
If you’re like me, you’ve probably heard a lot about AI changing how we work. Well, it’s true, and Microsoft’s Copilot is leading the charge.
This June, Copilot got even better. It’s now working hand-in-hand with our old friends – Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Plus, Copilot for Microsoft 365 got some cool new features.
Knowing your way around Copilot in Microsoft 365 is becoming a big deal. So, even if you haven’t tried Copilot yet, keep an eye on what it can do. Trust me, it’ll make jumping into AI-assisted work a whole lot easier when you’re ready.

Support for referencing PDF files in PowerPoint
Microsoft Copilot introduces the ability to create PowerPoint presentations from PDF files. This feature requires a Microsoft Copilot for Microsoft 365 license and will be globally available between late May and mid-June 2024. No admin action is needed for the rollout. Roadmap ID: 396344.

Microsoft Copilot in Microsoft 365 and in Microsoft Teams: The new Catch up feature
Microsoft 365 and Teams introduce ‘Catch up,’ a new feature in Microsoft Copilot, requiring a license. It provides updates and action prompts on a ‘Catch up’ tab, rolling out from late June to July 2024. No admin action needed for the rollout.

Microsoft Copilot in Microsoft Teams Meeting Chat will use transcript data when available
Microsoft Teams Meeting Chat’s Copilot will soon access transcript data, improving clarity over previous chat-only results. Rollout starts late June 2024, completing early July. It’s automatic for users with a Copilot for Microsoft 365 license and requires no admin action before rollout.
Optimized File Link Support in Microsoft Teams Chat and Channels
Microsoft Copilot introduces optimizations for faster and more reliable file and link retrieval in Teams chat and channels, requiring a Microsoft 365 license. Rollout begins mid-July 2024, with no additional action needed for preparation.
Receive coaching on your writing in Copilot in Word
The Copilot context menu will include an option for getting AI-generated coaching. Copilot will review the writing and offer suggestions for high-impact areas, such as logical structure, flow, and tone.
Microsoft Edge: Copilot summarization notification
The feature displays an Omnibox notification when users enter into a reading mode eligible page in Edge and offers them the option to open Copilot in the sidebar to generate a summary of the content.
Microsoft Copilot available in Outlook for Mac
The same Microsoft Copilot experience you can get in the Microsoft Teams app, at copilot.microsoft.com (work mode) and in other places is now available from within Microsoft Outlook for Mac. You can find the Copilot app in the left app bar.

Microsoft Copilot for Microsoft 365: Usage report Readiness metric update
The Microsoft 365 admin center’s Copilot for Microsoft 365 Usage report will update its “Users on an eligible update channel” metric logic to reflect the number of users on an eligible update channel more accurately. The update, rolling out mid to late June 2024, will likely decrease the metric’s reported number and requires no admin action.
Viva Insights: Delegate access to Microsoft Copilot Dashboard
Microsoft Viva Insights will soon allow leaders to delegate access to their Copilot Dashboard to designated individuals within their company. This feature will enable delegates to view insights and make informed decisions, without seeing the leader’s personal insights. It will be available on various platforms and is associated with Roadmap ID 398976. Rollout begins late June 2024. Admins can manage access with policies, and the feature is enabled by default. Organizations should prepare by reviewing the impact and updating documentation accordingly.
Updates to Security Admin permissions for Microsoft Copilot for Security
Starting July 13, Security Admins will have expanded authority within Microsoft Copilot for Security to control access to Microsoft 365 Customer Data, with no immediate action required from them. Organizations can opt-out anytime in the owner settings.

Microsoft Copilot in Microsoft Teams: Improved time-based responses in chat and channels
Microsoft Teams is enhancing Copilot’s ability to understand and respond to time-related queries, providing more accurate answers for terms like “yesterday” or “last month.” This feature requires a Copilot for Microsoft 365 license and will roll out in July 2024, with no admin action needed.
Word: Get started on a draft immediately with example prompts
On blank documents, Copilot in Word will provide one-click examples of prompts that quickly help you get going on your document.
Automatic summary of documents on file-open in Word
When you open a document, Copilot will generate a summary in the Word window. You can hide the summary or open the Copilot chat pane to ask specific questions about the document.
Longer documents can be summarized in chat
Copilot in Word will be able to completely summarize documents that it could only partially summarize before. The upper limit is increasing to about four times more words.
Reference PDF files in Copilot in Word
Users can now reference PDF files for Copilot to work with while generating content in Word.
Reference data from the Microsoft cloud when drafting with Copilot in Word
Draft with Copilot will allow users to explicitly add and reference specific mails, chats, meetings, and people.
Draft with Copilot will support attaching rich content from the Microsoft cloud—including emails and meetings—resulting in content that’s more contextually relevant.

Copilot in Excel – Summarize text columns
Copilot can analyze columns of text to give you summaries of the information. For example, Copilot will find the main themes in survey responses from open-ended questions.
Copilot in Excel – Custom chart and PivotTable creation
You can now ask for more specific charts and PivotTables, including specifying the x and y axis of charts.

Updated coaching by Copilot experience in the new Outlook for Windows and web
The new coaching by Copilot experience allows you to apply the coaching suggestions given by Copilot by requesting to rewrite the email message based on the feedback received when using coaching by Copilot. With this update, you can accept and make Copilot rewrite the email in one click based on those coaching suggestions. This feature will be available in the new Outlook for Windows and web.
Copilot Lab team prompt publishing
This feature gives commercial customers the ability to publish Copilot prompts to groups within their organization.

Save Prompt, Share Prompt, and Try in App release
With this feature, users of Copilot in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote will be able to save prompts that they have created to Copilot Lab and share them with their coworkers. Also, users on the Copilot Lab website who find a Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or OneNote prompt that they like will be able to launch Copilot and run that prompt with a single click of the new “Try in Copilot” button.

Control the availability of Copilot in Viva Goals using Viva Feature Access Management starting in July 2024
Starting July 2024, Copilot in Viva Goals will be managed via Viva Feature Access Management (VFAM). Admins can control its availability for specific groups or entire tenants. Existing settings will be automatically transferred to VFAM without needing reconfiguration. Rollout begins mid-July and completes by late August 2024.
